Wiltshire Young Carers

‘Struggles’ video featuring feedback from support staff

During July and August 2023, we provided a two-day song-writing, recording and film-making project for a group of Wiltshire Young Carers at The Pound Arts Centre. The sessions were facilitated by Will Lawton and Lloyd Edwards, funded by Community First and Wiltshire Music Connect and supported by The Pound Arts Centre.

The format of the workshop was as follows:

Day One

  • Round-the-circle introduction followed by free play session

  • Brainstorming song, theme and lyrical ideas and inspirations

  • Song writing, lyrics and structure - rough demo recorded at end of day one

  • Graphic brainstorm for film ideas

Day Two

  • Group and individual vocal recording and instrument recording

  • Film storyboarding

  • Filming

After the workshop, Will and Lloyd worked to edit the audio and video footage into the film seen above. The common theme that emerged from these sessions were the shared struggles and immense pressure experienced by young people who care for family members. They are often not understood by their school and peers and are regularly punished for not completing school work at home. The aim of this song was to enable this group of young people to voice and share their shared experiences and to share the struggles they suffer from and to help them form common bonds and identifications with each other.
