Workshop: Songwriting as a Therapeutic Practice

One-Day Workshop with Bob Heath and Will Lawton

Friday 10th July 2026 - 9.30am to 5pm
Pound Arts Centre, Corsham
Cost - £100

Songwriting is now well established as one of the main pillars of music therapy practice alongside improvisation and receptive techniques. This in-person workshop will be an opportunity to explore the process in more depth and to develop and refine skills in both one to one and group work.

There will be a considerable focus on practical, useable and transferable skills and the application of therapeutic songwriting approaches in a wide range of contexts and settings including Community Mental Health, Special Education, Palliative and Residential care.

This workshop will be appropriate for music therapists, community musicians and other practitioners who wish to explore and develop their creative therapeutic skills.

Bob Heath has been a music therapist and community musician for over 25 years during which time he has helped to establish therapeutic songwriting as one of the main pillars of music therapy practice. He continues to play an active role in the development of music therapy in Romania and Italy as well as the UK and continues to work as a therapist and supervisor in private practice.

Will Lawton qualified as a music therapist in 2019 and established The Rhythm Practice the following year. Based at The Pound in Corsham, Wiltshire, the practice now has a team of five therapists. Together with Bob Heath, he has played an active role in developing The Songwriting Organisation UK, which promotes the use of social prescribing for songwriting as a therapeutic intervention.
