Will Lawton, MA

Music Therapist and Singer-Songwriter

About Me

I am a registered Music Therapist with the British Association of Music Therapy (BAMT) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), as well as a skilled musician and singer-songwriter. My primary instruments are piano, percussion, and voice, and I have been writing, recording, and performing original music since my teenage years. Songwriting has long been an intuitive way for me to process experiences, emotions, and questions throughout my life. Much of my music has been officially released and can be explored through my personal music website.

My Approach

My work is rooted in a strong humanistic and person-centered approach, guided by the therapeutic principles of Carl Rogers. At its core, Music Therapy is about relationships. Meaningful change happens when the connection between client and therapist is genuine, honest, and collaborative. Through music and conversation, I aim to meet my clients where they are, fostering congruence and offering unconditional positive regard.

I welcome the use of alternative art forms in therapy, often incorporating visual arts, mandalas, and even stop-frame animation—any medium that helps my clients express themselves, connect with me, and open up.

Influenced by the philosophy of positive psychology, particularly the work of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, I focus on strengths rather than weaknesses, helping to build the good in life rather than simply repairing the bad.

With a lifelong understanding of the power of songwriting, I frequently draw on this as a therapeutic tool, enabling individuals to process emotions and experiences through creative expression. Often, this results in a recorded piece, which can continue to support and heal long after the sessions have ended.
